County begins construction on December 2 Memorial

County begins construction on December 2 Memorial

Construction has begun on the Curtain of Courage Memorial on the east side of the County Government Center at 385 North Arrowhead Avenue in downtown San Bernardino.

The Memorial is a tribute to the 14 people who lost their lives on December 2, 2015, in the terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center on Waterman Avenue.

The project was designed by landscape architect and artist Walter Hood, with input from the December 2 Memorial Committee, and the families of Robert Adams, Isaac Gebreslassie Amanios, Bennetta Betbadal, Harry “Hal” Bowman, Sierra Clayborn, Juan Espinoza, Aurora Godoy, Shannon Johnson, Daniel Kaufman, Damian Meins, Tin Nguyen, Nicholas Thalasinos, Yvette Velasco and Mike Wetzel.

The design is a structure comprised of mesh panels made of bronze and steel that are cast with different color glass pieces. The panels simulate the curvature of a curtain and are situated around sitting areas to create a place of healing and reflection by evoking an image of a prism’s eternal sparkle.

Construction is expected to be completed in the spring of 2022. The County will hold a private ceremony for the families and survivors when the Memorial is completed followed by a public unveiling.
