Phase one of the Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center renovation is finished.
The nine-acre facility in Devore reopened Sept. 19 and is accepting male inmates who had been stationed in other San Bernardino County correctional facilities, according to a statement on the county’s website.
The rehabilitation center shut down in August 2024.
“Reopening Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center is an important step in improving our correctional facilities and expanding rehabilitation and reentry services,” said Sheriff Shannon Dicus in the statement. “I’m grateful for the support of the board of supervisors, and the work of our dedicated staff and community partners, who continue to make these efforts possible.”
The department will now begin upgrading outdoor recreation areas at the High Desert Detention Center.
A second phase of the Glen Helen facility, which opened in 1960 and and is the county’s primary facility for male and female inmates, is expected to reopen later this year, according to the statement.
