County Health Officer issues heat advisory for San Bernardino

Summer temperatures are back in the Inland Empire and with that comes the potential for heat-related illnesses.

San Bernardino County Health Officer Dr. Michael Sequeira is advising residents to keep themselves and their loved ones, including pets, safe from the heat.

“The summer heat can pose significant health risks, and it is crucial for individuals to be aware of these risks and take necessary precautions. Heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, can be life-threatening, especially for vulnerable populations,” Sequeira said. “By staying cool, staying hydrated, and staying informed, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from the dangers of extreme heat. Summer heat awareness is not just about comfort; It is a matter of public health and safety.”

County Public Health advises people to:

  • Stay cool
    • Stay in air-conditioned buildings. To find an air-conditioned cooling center, call 211 or 800-510-2020
    • Limit outdoor activity, especially during the heat of the day
    • Wear loose, light-colored and lightweight clothing
    • Take cool baths and showers
    • Never leave children or pets in a parked car, even with the windows open
  • Stay hydrated
    • Drink more than usual
    • Drink two to four cups every hour while working
    • Avoid liquids with sugar and caffeine
  • Protect your pets
    • Bring pets indoors during extreme heat
    • Make sure pets who remain outdoors have shade
    • Don’t force animals to exercise when it’s hot; instead wait until the early morning or late in the evening
