Peak fire containment good news for residents

Last week San Bernardino County Fire Crews were dispatched to a reported vegetation fire in the 2500 block of Old Waterman Canyon Road in North San Bernardino. Due to the fire being adjacent to the San Bernardino National Forest, the United States Forest Service also sent a full response, including aircraft.

When crews arrived on scene, they found a vehicle fire had spread to the surrounding vegetation quickly burning 5 acres. The fire headed uphill in medium to heavy fuels, jumping Highway 18 and burning towards National Forest land.

Since the fire was in San Bernardino County Fire’s Direct Protection Area (DPA) and was an immediate threat to USFS San Bernardino National Forest land, both agencies entered unified command to work to contain the fire.

The fire, named the “Peak Fire,” was held to about 35 acres and was 100% contained by Thursday morning.

An estimated 150 firefighters and 14 pieces of aircraft with the US Forest Service, along with San Bernardino County Fire, responded to the fire. One firefighter was injured and transported to a local hospital. He has since been released. No homes were damaged or destroyed by the fire.

Firefighters will continue to monitor and patrol the fire for the days to come.
