San Bernardino County is trying to make life safer for homeless people, according to a statement on the county’s website.
On Sept. 9, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors adopted an ordinance to ban homeless encampments on county public property and public rights of way, citing dangers including flooding, wildfire, extreme heat and cold, rail collisions, and traffic accidents.
“The number of encampments on county public property has increased over recent years,” said Supervisor Dawn Rowe in the statement. “These conditions threaten not only those living within the encampments, but also the broader community. The goal is to address health and safety risks, while ensuring that homeless people have access to the support they need.”
In July 2024, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order urging cities and counties to remove homeless encampments. That order came shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court gave local jurisdictions more leeway in removing gatherings of homeless people.
“Passing this ordinance is an important step in our proactive approach to addressing homeless encampments,” said Rowe. “It also ensures that people experiencing homelessness have access to the appropriate supportive services.”
The county said it will prioritize flood channels and other areas that expose inhabitants to critical health and safety dangers and humanely relocate individuals while connecting them to housing and supportive services.

This is a big concern for everyone. Ive met /know a few ppl that are homeless. Most are really nice and willing to work at trying to ge on their feet. Unfortunately its nearly impossible to do so with the econmy the way it is. Ive also met a few that feel the world owes them, then again, who knows what their stoey is and whats made them be, well, asses! But all in all Im SO VERY grateful that my husband had good life ins. thru his company, or I, too, could/would probably be homeless. My age mostly, and skills I posses would never be enough to pay rent, etc.
