Cal State San Bernardino has received $4.9 million in federal grants that will help it expand childcare for students with children.
The two subsidies from the U.S Department of Education will also assist individuals who want to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and health care, according to a statement on the university’s website.
The larger award, – $3,541,904 – is from the Child Care Access Means Parents in School program. It will provide affordable childcare for Pell Grant-eligible undergraduates with children six months to 12 years old.
A second grant of $1,329,385, from the Strengthening Institutions Program, will help the STEM and health care students.
“Whether you’re a new parent in school or come from a working-class community, where you start out shouldn’t decide whether you finish a degree and land a good-paying job,” said Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-San Bernardino, who arranged the grants, in a statement.
