San Bernardino sends cease-and-desist letter to council member

San Bernardino city council member Treasure Ortiz has been sent a cease-and-desist letter by the city.

The letter, dated Feb. 27 and posted on the city of San Bernardino’s website, accuses Ortiz of “engag(ing) in a pattern of conduct directed toward city staff that raises serious concerns about professionalism, harassment, misuse of authority, and the creation of a hostile work environment.”

The letter further implores Ortiz, who is engaged in a legal battle with the city, to refrain from any behavior that could be considered harassment or retaliation.

“The city is aware of multiple instances in which you have publicly accused the city and its police department of corruption and mismanagement, and alleged personal targeting, without substantiation,” the letter states. “You have attempted to use your position as a city councilwoman, and the city’s insignia, to amplify such accusations.”

In February, Ortiz pleaded not guilty in San Bernardino County Superior Court to charges that she violated a state law that prohibits taping a telephone conversation without the other party’s consent.

Ortiz has filed a lawsuit against the San Bernardino Police Officers Association, charging that group with spreading misinformation about her council campaign. She is seeking $2 million in damages, according to published reports.
