San Bernardino receives $100,000 for robotic K9 unit

During the March 4 city council meeting, San Bernardino was presented with a $100,000 ceremonial check from San Bernardino County Supervisor Joe Baca Jr. to assist the San Bernardino Police Department with the purchase of a Robotic Police K9 unit.

The funding from San Bernardino County will help the Police Department acquire the robotic platform, which allows officers to remotely assess potential high-risk situations before officers are required to enter potentially dangerous locations. The technology can be deployed during incidents involving armed suspects, barricaded individuals, and potential explosive or hazardous devices, providing officers with real-time video, audio, and environmental information.

Law enforcement agencies across the nation are increasingly adopting robotic technologies to address the growing complexity of critical incidents and to reduce the inherent risks associated with high-risk operations. Robotic Police K9 systems have emerged as valuable tools for enhancing officer safety, operational awareness, and tactical decision-making.

Equipped with cameras, audio capabilities, and advanced mobility, the robotic unit can navigate hallways, stairwells, and confined spaces, operate in low-visibility environments, and transmit live information to officers and incident commanders. This capability allows officers to visually assess interior conditions, locate suspects, and identify potential threats before committing personnel into harm’s way.

The total estimated cost of the Robotic Police K9 system is $350,000. The $100,000 contribution from the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors will be applied toward the purchase. The remaining $250,000 will be funded through Police Department funds and other identified funding sources.

The acquisition reflects the San Bernardino Police Department’s continued commitment to innovation, responsible use of technology, and proactive investments in public safety tools that protect both officers and the San Bernardino community.
