San Bernardino installs solar street lights

San Bernardino recently installed 397 solar-powered street lights.

The citywide project was completed during the 2025-’26 fiscal year, which ended June 30, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Eighty three more solar lights are expected to be installed during the next two to three months. Those lights will be at:

• Eighteen lights at Central Avenue, from Lena Road east to Tippecanoe Avenue;
• Twenty one lights at Central Avenue, from Tippecanoe Avenue east to Mountain View Avenue;
• Thirteen lights at Mountain View Avenue Bridge, both sides, and the west side from the bridge south to San Bernardino Avenue;
• Twelve lights at Riverview Drive, from Mountain View Avenue west to Richardson Avenue;
• Nineteen lights at Sierra Way, from Mill Street north to the railroad tracks in front of the City Yard.

San Bernardino has put in 480 solar-powered street lights during the past year. Besides saving money by not using electricity, cities favor solar lights because they don’t use copper wire, which is frequently stolen, said Jeff Kraus, San Bernardino spokesman.
