San Bernardino City Council appoints Eric Levitt as new City Manager

The City of San Bernardino announced yesterday that Fullerton City Manager Eric Levitt has been named its next City Manager. The announcement followed a nationwide recruitment process and the approval of an employment agreement with Levitt at the June 4 City Council meeting.

“Today marks a significant moment for the City of San Bernardino. I am proud to officially welcome Eric Levitt as our permanent City Manager,” said Mayor Helen Tran. “Eric sees the potential of our city, shares our vision, and has the leadership skills to bring a stronger, more vibrant City to the residents we serve.”

Levitt’s current agreement with the City of Fullerton requires a 45-day notice of his departure, pushing his starting date in San Bernardino to August 4.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to work collaboratively with the Mayor, City Council, and staff to improve the quality of life for the residents and businesses in San Bernardino, said Levitt. “They are all passionate about achieving their vision for the community and I am honored to be able to work with them.”

Eric Levitt has spent the past three years as City Manager of Fullerton, a city of nearly 145,000 residents which like San Bernardino, is home to both a California State University campus and a community college. During his tenure, he worked with the City Council to develop a retail economic development strategic plan, increase funding for infrastructure and street improvements, cut staffing vacancies substantially, and initiated community-based events.

Prior to Fullerton, Levitt spent the previous eighteen years as city manager of Alameda, Simi Valley, Janesville, Wisconsin, and Sedona, Arizona.  As City Manager in Simi Valley, Janesville and Sedona, his fiscal management led to an increase in each community’s financial bond ratings.

“Eric’s proven track record of growth, fiscal responsibility, and community engagement are in perfect alignment with the needs of San Bernardino,” added Tran. “The Council and I look forward to working closely with him because his success is San Bernardino’s success.”

Levitt stated that he plans to relocate to San Bernardino in the coming months.

The appointment of Levitt as City Manager fills a position that has been open since May of 2024, when the Mayor and Council terminated the employment of Charles Montoya.
