San Bernardino bans short-term rentals

San Bernardino has banned all short-term housing rentals, effective May 15.

In a 4-3 vote cast April 15, the San Bernardino city council sided with residents who have complained about noise, parking problems and property damage caused by vacation renters, according to multiple reports.

The vote came after months of debate about whether to regulate the practice or ban it outright. Mayor Pro Tem Kim Knaus, and council members Theodore Sanchez and Sandra Ibarra voted against the ban.

About 108 properties are classified as short-term rentals by the city.

Fines will start at $1,000 per day but could change in the future, and all property owners who violate the ban will be ordered to stop the practice, the reports stated.
