The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors has approved a housing development designed to help college students find an affordable place to live.
Legacy Village will be built across from San Bernardino Valley College at the request of the San Bernardino Community College District, according to a county statement.
The 15-acre project will include 88 affordable housing units, 180 workforce housing units, and 461 student housing beds. About 9,400 square feet will be used for food service, conferences, and community meetings.
The project, which the board unanimously approved Oct. 20, is meant to help former foster youth. The project’s cost, and a construction schedule, were not announced.
“Every young person deserves the opportunity to build a stable and successful future,” said Supervisor Joe Baca Jr. in the statement. “Legacy Village will do more than provide housing, it will connect young people with education, workforce opportunities, and the support they need to become self-sufficient.”
The board pledged a conditional commitment of $28 million from the county’s Foster Youth Campus Reserve, a funding source the county created to help pay for projects like Legacy Village, according to the statement.
