Caltrans set to begin work on changeable message sign system

Work is set to begin this week by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) on the installation of a changeable message sign system (CMS).

The $14.2 million project funded by SB1 installs CMS signs at various locations along Interstate 10 (I 10), State Route (SR) 2, SR 18, SR 38, SR 210, SR 247 and SR 330 in San Bernardino County. The project will include furnishing sign structures, installing the changeable message system, upgrading guardrails, and creating maintenance vehicle pullout areas.

The purpose of the signs is to provide real-time traffic updates to help drivers make informed decisions about their travel routes. The project is expected to be completed by late Spring 2026.

Work Schedule:

  • Daywork is planned from Monday to Friday, between 7:00 am and 3:00 pm at various locations throughout San Bernardino County on I-10, SR 2, SR 18, SR 38, SR 210, SR 247 and SR 330.
  • Nightwork is planned to take place on SR 210 and I-10, Monday to Friday, 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM.

Lane closures are anticipated as crews will be installing the CMS sign structures. Lane, ramp, and/or shoulder closures may take place as needed.

Caltrans advises that the construction schedule is subject to change due to material, equipment availability and weather conditions.
