San Bernardino Celebrates Grand Re-Opening of Nicholson Park

The City of San Bernardino celebrated the grand re-opening of Nicholson Park on Saturday, August 15, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that drew families from across the community to see the completely rebuilt neighborhood park.

The festivities featured games, food vendors, a petting zoo, face painting, and a special showing of the Pixar classic Cars as part of the City’s Starlight Cinema Movies in the Park series, a fitting choice given the park’s proximity to the historic Route 66 corridor.

“Nicholson Park represents the strength of our community—its present and its promise,” Mayor Tran said. “Today is a proud day for our city.”

The completely rebuilt park now features two new ball fields, a universally accessible playground, walking trail, new fencing and lighting, picnic areas, a snack bar, parking lot, and extensive landscaping. The improvements were designed to provide residents with more opportunities for recreation, gathering, and community connection.

The City Council approved $8.5 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for the renovation, with construction beginning in summer 2024.

Tran highlighted the park’s accessible benches and bleachers, continuous walking path, inclusive playground, and ballfields that support adaptive recreation.

“Nicholson Park is now a truly inclusive park for everyone,” added Tran during the ceremony. “No matter your age, ability, or mobility, you belong here.”

The next phase will focus on the Nicholson Park Community Center. With $850,000 in federal funding secured by Congressman Pete Aguilar, the City plans to renovate the facility and restore it as an important gathering place for youth, seniors, and families participating in Parks, Recreation & Community Services programs.

The park will also soon feature a new mural by local muralist Hal Lacy, adding color and a sense of community pride to the space.

Nicholson Park is located at 2750 W. 2nd Street in San Bernardino.
