Rowe Branch Library has free seed packets for home gardeners

The Seed Library at the San Bernardino Public Library’s Howard M. Rowe Branch has received a significant donation, expanding its collection to approximately 1,400 seed packets available for free public use for local home gardeners.

“The Rowe Branch Library is proud to offer a free, expanded local resource for community members interested in growing their own food or exploring gardening as a new hobby,” said Library Site Supervisor Sarah Dizon. “This program is especially valuable for individuals who may not have regular access to fresh produce, herbs, or flowers.”

Seed libraries have become an increasingly popular offering at public libraries across the nation, supporting sustainability, food access, and community engagement.

It also provides beginners with the opportunity to try gardening without the upfront cost of seeds.

A San Bernardino Public Library card is not required to “borrow” seeds from the Seed Library, located at 108 E. Marshall Blvd., making it an accessible resource for all community members, including kids.

And while a traditional library requires books that are checked out to be returned, a seed library has no such requirement.

Dizon added that the Seed Library aims to distribute rare, local, and heirloom seed varieties while fostering community connections. “We hope it encourages residents to share seeds, exchange advice, and support one another in creating and maintaining successful gardens.”

Rowe Branch Library’s regular hours are:

  • Monday & Tuesday: Noon to 8 p.m.
  • Wednesday & Thursday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Friday & Sunday: Closed
