Museum exhibition celebrates the life and work of local artist Rudy Ramirez

A new exhibit celebrating the life, work and legacy of local artist Rudy C. Ramirez is opening at the San Bernardino County Museum January 17.

Rudy Ramirez: A Retrospective, 1969–Present,” exhibition brings together more than 70 works spanning over 50 years of Ramirez’s artistic practice. His work reflects a deep connection to the greater San Bernardino County region, where he has lived, created and contributed to the cultural landscape for decades. Featuring paintings, collage, sketch studies, sculpture, pottery and large mural works, the retrospective highlights the evolution of Ramirez’s visual language across six decades of creativity.

Ramirez was born and raised in South Colton. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam, he returned home and immersed himself in artmaking. He studied art through the G.I. Bill at San Bernardino Valley College and later earned a degree in studio art from Cal State San Bernardino. His artistic journey continued through professional work as an illustrator and sign painter at George Air Force Base, Norton Air Force Base, Edwards Air Force Base and March Air Force Base. He is also a founding member of the Inland Empire Latino Art Association.

Ramirez’s practice spans watercolor, collage, pencil, oil, acrylic and mixed media. His art is influenced by personal experiences, community connections and places he has visited. He draws inspiration from abstract artists, often using color to explore and communicate emotion. Recurring themes in his work include reflections on life and death, cultural identity, and responses to current events.

“Ramirez’s career is woven into the creative history of the region,” said Erica Watkins, co-curator for this exhibition. “His work as an illustrator, muralist and arts advocate has shaped the cultural identity of San Bernardino County. This retrospective honors not only his artistic journey, but also his impact on generations of artists and community members.”

The exhibition runs through April 12. General admission is $10 for adults, $8 for military and seniors, $7 for students and $5 for children ages 6–12. Children 5 and under are free. The San Bernardino County Museum is located at 2024 Orange Tree Lane, Redlands.
