The union that represents 12,000 Stater Bros. employees has approved a possible strike against the San Bernardino-based supermarket chain.
That action, which alleges unfair labor practices, does not mean a strike will take place, according to a statement posted July 25 on the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 135 site.
“This vote prepares all of us to take action if Stater Bros. continues to commit unfair labor practices that undermine our rights,” the statement reads. “It does not mean we are on a path to a strike right now.”
Contract talks are scheduled to resume July 30-31, according to the statement.
A Stater Bros. spokesman confirmed those talks.
“We are eager to return to the negotiating table to reach an agreement that reflects the value and importance of our store teammates, maintains the long-term health of the company, and helps us hold the line on grocery prices for our customers,” said Jonathan Lieu, Stater Bros.’ Corporate communications manager, in the statement.
The union’s contract with Stater Bros, and several other supermarket chains expired March 2. Settlements have already been been reached with Albertsons and Kroger.
This is reportedly the first approval of a possible strike by Stater Bros. Employees in the company’s 89-year history.
