San Bernardino entrepreneur makes major donation to police

The San Bernardino Police Department’s traffic division has a new motorcycle, courtesy of one the city’s most prominent businessmen.

Cliff Cummings, owner of Toyota of San Bernardino, has donated $40,000 to the department, which it used to buy a BMW motorcycle, said Capt. Nelson Carrington.

The motorcycle was retrofitted and put into service earlier this month. The department now has 10 motorcycles to accommodate its eight motorcycle officers, who enforce traffic regulations and investigate accidents.

Carrington believes the new addition will greatly assist in the overall effectiveness of traffic safety for the City.

“It’s a great thing for the department to have,” Carrington said. “Motorcycles are so much more maneuverable, and they can get into places that regular vehicle can’t get into, especially downtown.  We really appreciate this donation.”

Cummings, who has let the department train at Auto Center buildings before they’re torn down, approached the department about making the donation.

“The department is San Bernardino at its best,” Cummings said. “I’m thinking about something for the fire department next.”
