Two more city parks to get facelift

Two more parks in San Bernardino are scheduled to receive much needed improvements, thanks to a partnership with the County of San Bernardino.

Proposals for upgrades to La Plaza Park and Newmark Field were approved by the City Council last month during which a ceremonial check from County Supervisor Joe Baca Jr. was presented to commemorate the partnership.

“Parks are the heart of our neighborhoods, and these improvements will ensure our families have a safe, beautiful space to gather, play, and thrive,” said San Bernardino Mayor Helen Tran. “Working with Supervisor Baca and the County to invest in La Plaza Park and Newmark Field shows how we how can partner to benefit our residents.”

La Plaza Park is a two-acre park on Mt Vernon Avenue between 7th Street and Victoria Street. It is located along Historic Route 66, which will be celebrating its 100th anniversary next year.

The $1.78 million improvement project will include: demolition and replacement of the restrooms, restoring and repainting the gazebo, re-grading the site and replacing the irrigation and landscaping near the gazebo, adding playground equipment with integrated shade, and replacing the playground area surfacing.

The County of San Bernardino will be providing $1,342,243 and the City will be contributing $447,414 to fund the La Plaza Park project.

Newmark Field is home to the Newmark Little League and is located at 3898 Pershing near 39th Street and Severance Avenue. The five-acre park includes three baseball diamonds, a concession stand, and restrooms.

The $758,425 project will include: upgrades to main field dugouts, repair and painting of the fencing at the main field, installation of a permanent shade structure, new landscaping, a new entry sign installation, and new concrete walkways throughout the bleachers.

The County of San Bernardino will be providing $569,250 and the City will be contributing $189,750 to fund the Newmark Field project.

“Youth sports build character, discipline, and community pride,” added Tran. “With Supervisor Baca’s support in partnership with the City, Newmark Field and its Little League will soon have the upgraded facilities our kids deserve.”

Both projects are expected to be completed in spring of 2026.

  1. Don’t trust Joe Bacca Jr., he also said there would be lights added to Rosena Ranch AYSO, but he is only adding lights to the baseball fields. He came to the opening ceremony last spring and told everyone there would be lights. Lie!
