City unveils new mural at Lytle Creek Park

San Bernardino city staff, elected officials and community members gathered at the Lytle Creek Park Community Center last week to celebrate the unveiling of a new mural depicting civil rights and labor activist Cesar Chavez.

Christian Mariscal, the artist behind the work, has also painted many utility boxes, benches and other murals throughout San Bernardino.

Mariscal’s work at Lytle Creek Park depicts Cesar Chavez, who in addition to spending a significant amount of time in California’s Central Valley, spent time in San Bernardino organizing nearby farmworkers and leading voter registration drives in the City’s westside area.

Mayor Helen Tran and City Council members Theodore Sanchez, Juan Figueroa, and Dr. Treasure Ortiz presented Mariscal with a certificate of recognition for his work. Also recognized was artist Karlo Magallanes, who had previously painted a mural of Cesar Chavez where the new mural now stands.

Several other upgrades are in the works at Lytle Creek Park including futsal courts which are expected to open next month.
