Partnership brings High Intensity Activated Crosswalk to 5th and Pedley

Pedestrians in San Bernardino will be a little safer thanks to the activation of a new HAWK signal at the intersection of 5th Street and Pedley Road, near Monterey Elementary School.

The new HAWK or High – intensity Activated Crosswalk signal was made possible from an $888,000 investment from the County of San Bernardino in partnership with the City.

“This project is about keeping our kids safe,” said Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr., in a statement. “We’re committed to making our community safer, and this traffic signal is an important step in that direction.”

The crossing at 5th and Pedley is 75 feet wide, making it challenging for pedestrians, especially with vehicles often exceeding the 25-mph school zone speed limit. During school drop-off and pick-up times, about 80% of drivers are speeding, which puts children at risk.

“We know that safe, reliable infrastructure is critical in ensuring that our students and families feel secure as they walk or bike to school,” said Superintendent Mauricio Arellano, San Bernardino City Unified. “This new traffic light is a vital step in addressing the concerns that have been raised through research done by the County’s Public Works Department.”
