The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mountain Communities received a donation of $52,762 from Subaru of San Bernardino. The check will be used to open several sites that have been closed due to Covid-19 protocols. In a news release they said they hope to have most sites open by Fall of 2021.
The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Mountain Communities have several locations including the Iacono (Crestline) Club, the Valley of Enchantment Club, the Charles Hoffman (Running Springs) Club and the Lake Arrowhead Club.
The press release also stated, “Our Iacone building has been opened since last summer where we have guided the kid’s with their computers, zoom classes and Google classroom. The thirty kids that we have been able to help report great success in maintaining their classroom education are their grades reflect the same. The Iacono site has also been providing a weekly food drive for the families we serve.
In 2014 we opened the Cedar Glen Resale Boutique in Cedar Glen which is the largest thrift store operating in the Mountains with over 5,000 square feet of shopping and a staff of six. It has become a main source of funds for our kids and like Subaru, a source that has been there for us. In the early startup of the store Cliff and Subaru launched an advertising program with the Mountain News that supported and drove traffic to our store. Our store is not only a source of funds but a chance for us to talk about our Clubs and Subaru.”
Although many perceive the mountain areas to be wealthy and mostly vacation homes there are many at-risk children that live in the region and depend on the services they provide.
“The mountain area demographics actually skew low-income and most of the people who live on the mountain full-time work in the hospitality and service industries so there is real need here for these services,” said Dennis Parker, Board President.
Subaru of San Bernardino has a history of support for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Mountain Communities. In the last several years Subaru of San Bernardino has donated more than $300,000.
“We have been supporting them for 23 years. The relationship was the result of my neighbor running the organization for years. They needed financial help and we were glad to provide it,” said Cliff Cummings, owner of Subaru of San Bernardino. ”It’s been a tremendous relationship and has had really positive results…they are a really dedicated staff that works very hard for those kids and we are pleased to support their work.”
