The city of San Bernardino has received $950,000 in federal funding that it will use to install high-tech security cameras downtown.
Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-San Bernardino, presented city officials with a symbolic check during a downtown news conference April 25. The funding is part of the recently approved 2023-2024 Federal budget.
The cameras will include data analytics that can be used by the Department to both monitor activity and assist with criminal investigations.
“We have a stellar police department that is reducing crime in the city, but you can never have enough resources when it comes to providing safety,” said Councilmember Theodore Sanchez, whose first district includes downtown. “We’re trying to get businesses to locate downtown, and this will help us do that.”
Details of the project – where and how many cameras will be installed and a timeline for their installation – won’t be determined until the council awards a contract to a security company.
“Right now, we’re celebrating because we have close to $1 million to spend on this project,” Sanchez said.
