IVDA receives grant for Sterling Avenue bridge, roadway improvements

Grant funds new Sterling Avenue bridge and roadway improvements

The Inland Valley Development Agency (IVDA) approved a $3.8 million project to connect Sterling Avenue directly to the SBD International Airport.  The project will extend Sterling Avenue directly to the Airport, and improve the existing roadway between Third and Fifth Streets.

Funding for the improvements comes from a $3 million US Department of Commerce grant sponsored by Congressman Pete Aguilar with matching funds of $800,000 provided jointly by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and IVDA.

According to the January 11, 2022 IVDA Commission Meeting, Sterling Avenue improvements include widening the roadway and constructing a new intersection to improve circulation of vehicle and truck traffic. The project will follow the City of San Bernardino’s Master Plan by constructing a 104 foot wide intersection to its ultimate width. The roadway will include new curb, gutter, storm drain, striping, ADA sidewalk with, street lights, upgraded traffic signals, new turn lanes and resurfacing the roadway.

The Third Street intersection will be constructed with a four-way signal to accommodate the new bridge connecting Sterling Avenue directly to the Airport, including improved access to the Airport’s fuel farm,

“As SBD International Airport continues to grow and contribute to the local economy, we are constantly working to improve access to the Airport and improve traffic flow for our customers and the community, said SBD International Airport Chief Executive Officer Michael Burrows.  “This project will create better access to the Airport, and improve safety at the Third Street/Sterling intersection for residents and businesses increasingly traveling this corridor.”

The Airport will be soliciting a Request for Qualifications from qualified engineers to develop project plans and specifications.
