Sheriff’s department debunks serial killer hoax, warns of scam

Scams and hoaxes abound on social media and every so often, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has to issue a warning to local residents for their protection.

This time, its a post on social media alleging that a serial killer named Robert Thibodeau is on the loose and attacking people. Authorities have clarified that these claims are baseless and part of a larger bait-and-switch scam.

In a post on Instagram, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department says, “We are aware of posts on social media alleging that a serial killer named Robert Thibodeau is on the run and attacking people. This is a scam that is appearing across the nation.

“If you see this post do not share it. Report it to the platform (usually Facebook). If it appears on the feed of a group or page you follow report it to the group or page administrators so they can remove it.”

Reports indicate that these posts are designed to exploit public fears by falsely claiming the existence of a serial killer and encourage engagement through likes and shares. Then the scam switches content into advertisements for unrelated services.

The Sheriff’s Department assures the public that if the threat were real, the Department would inform the public immediately. “Please be assured that we would inform you immediately of any potential threat to your safety or the safety of our community. Your safety is our greatest priority.”
