Omnitrans will offer unlimited free rides to students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade.
The program, Free Fares for School, will be a six-month pilot program and will apply to any fixed-route operated by Omnitrans, which will allow students to participate in all after-school and weekend activities, according to a statement.
That includes all Omnitrans local and freeway express routes, as well as sbX rapid transit.
“We know that there is a measurable link between access to transportation, student attendance and graduation,” said Erin Rogers, Omnitrans chief executive officer and general manager, in the statement. “Omnitrans wants to help build the next generation of success and ridership in our community by providing a safe, convenient transportation option for students.”
Students must show their school-issued student ID card – which will be fitted with a sticker – at boarding time.
The program is scheduled to start Aug. 1 and last through Feb. 22. If successful, Omnitrans will consider making the program permanent, according to the statement.
