San Bernardino International Airport Outpaces Country in Air Cargo Growth in 2020

Recently released data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) shows that San Bernardino International Airport (SBD) now ranks 59th of approximately 140 American airports in air cargo for last year.  This is an increase in ranking from 79th in 2019 and 102nd in 2018.

With updated infrastructure and business investments that support daily, large-scale air cargo operations, SBD helps speed time-sensitive goods to their final destinations. SBD airport is chosen by cargo giants for its proximity to Southern California’s Inland Empire with an estimated 4.7 million consumers and the greater Los Angeles basin with convenient access to multiple highways surrounding the airport.

San Bernardino’s Group VI runway easily accommodates the world’s largest aircraft, while skilled and certified staff and specialized equipment ensure quick cargo handling and efficient turn times.

“In 2016, cargo activity totaled just 36 flights,” said Mark Gibbs, the Airport’s Director of Aviation.  “Today SBD consistently ranks as one of the country’s top airports for air cargo growth due to its unmatched convenience, expansive infrastructure and prime location in the Southern California marketplace.”

In 2020, air cargo landed weight rose to 471,000,000 pounds increasing 34% from the prior year and 164% from 2018.

After almost 30 years of civilian use, the former Norton Air Force Base is now producing jobs and economic growth for the East Valley of San Bernardino County.  The airport and surrounding industrial and commercial uses that were once occupied by the United States Military and related uses has now surpassed employment levels of 14,000 jobs.

These 14,000 jobs eclipse the estimated 10,000 military and civilian jobs the base provided in its heyday.
