During the month of August, Stater Bros. Markets is partnering with Aramburo Produce, Progressive Produce, and Westlake Produce to host several New Mexico Hatch Chile Roasting events at select Stater Bros. location parking lots during their Hatch Chile Campaign this year.
Hatch Chiles are only available from early August through late September every year, and roasting them maximizes their smoky, rich, and mildly spicy flavor profile.
Hatch Chiles will be available for purchase at all Stater Bros. locations; however, on August 10 the San Bernardino location at 161 E 40th Street also offer customers the convenience of buying and roasting their chiles at the same time. Roasting is available for free with the purchase of a 10 lb. or 25 lb. box.
The roasting event will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon. (Locations, dates, and times are subject to change without notice.)
To roast chiles at home, follow these simple instructions:
- Grill: Place the chiles directly onto a hot grill. When the bottoms begin to turn black, charred or blistered, use tongs to turn the chiles over and repeat on the other side.
- Stovetop: Hold chiles over your stove’s gas flame with a long fork or tongs while roasting on all sides.
- Oven: Place chiles under the broiler. When they blacken, turn chiles over and roast the other side.
After roasting is complete, place the chiles in a paper or plastic bag, seal tightly and allow chiles to sit for approximately 10 minutes to cool. Once cool, remove skins and enjoy right away or freeze to enjoy in your favorite recipes all year long.
