Frontage road closed to make way for construction on Mt. Vernon bridge

The San Bernardino County Transportation Authority has shut down the frontage road next to the Mt. Vernon Bridge between 2nd and 3rd streets in San Bernardino.

The closure, which is permanent, will allow Southern California Edison to move utility poles and create space for construction of the new Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Construction will take place from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The bridge closed to the public in December 2020 and disassembly was completed in April 2021. Work is expected to be completed in 2025.

During construction, local residents can reach their neighborhood via 3rd Street and Metrollink Way.

Also, the transportation commission and Omnitrans are providing free bus service while the bridge is under construction. The free service provides hundreds of trips every month, according to the statement.
