San Bernardino Animal Services Rescue Dog Trapped in Storm Drain

A dog that was trapped in a storm drain last month is doing well following a heroic rescue by San Bernardino Animal Services staff.

On June 16, Animal Services responded to a report of a small white dog trapped in a storm drain. Public Works was contacted and opened the manhole cover, but the dog was no longer visible and appeared to have moved deeper into the system.

Over the next several days, additional calls came in about a dog seen and heard in a nearby storm drain, Animal Control Field Supervisor Andrew Fisher and Officer Jasmine Torres were able to locate the dog inside the drain.

The San Bernardino Police Department secured the street allowing Fisher and Torres to open the access door, climb inside, and safely retrieve the dog using a net.

Initially the dog was fearful and shut down, but after some patience and kindness from staff, the dog gradually began to warm up and sought affection. San Bernardino Animal Services Rescue Dog Trapped in Storm DrainStaff at the Satellite Adoption Center have named the dog Dixie.

Dixie was released to a foster caregiver who had witnessed the rescue and the dog will be adopted following her spay surgery.

Information about other pets available for adoption is on the city’s website.
