Norton the SBD Fly dog turns four

San Bernardino International Airport (SBD) held a pawsitively perfect party last week to celebrate the 4th birthday of Norton the SBD Fly Dog. Norton is the airport’s hardworking and much-loved wildlife hazard prevention border collie.

The birthday celebration included a meet-and-greet with Norton, photo opportunities with the birthday pup and and light engagement activities highlighting the airport’s wildlife hazard management program.

In Southern California, where wildlife is abundant, SBD must ensure runways are clear and safe for passengers and animals alike before every flight. Norton the SBD Fly Dog patrols the runway and encourages birds and animals to stay out of the way.

Norton wears boots, goggles, and a vest while he’s out on patrol. Born in Texas on April 20, 2022, Norton has big brown eyes, a black and white coat, and a friendly, eager personality.

Norton works Wednesday through Sunday each week, running about 2 miles along the runway every morning to help clear the area of birds like crows and hawks, and even butterflies and dragonflies! He loves to chase anything that flies and is always excited to do his job.

Border collies are widely used in wildlife management because their presence mimics that of a natural predator, encouraging birds and other animals to leave the area without causing harm. Under the direction of Airport Operations personnel and in coordination with USDA Wildlife Services, Norton helps move wildlife safely away from the airfield and discourages animals from returning. This proactive program is incorporated into SBD’s daily functions to protect aircraft, staff, and passengers. The airport’s efforts align with FAA standards for airport safety, focusing on keeping the airfield safe.
