Council concedes, votes to demolish Carousel Mall

The San Bernardino City Council revisited the issue of demolishing the now-defunct Carousel Mall during Wednesday’s council meeting.

The issue of what to do with the property has become urgent in recent months due to increased crime and emergency calls, but the Council was not interested in tackling the problem until after Mayor Valdivia lost his re-election bid.

According to staff reports, the mall has cost the city more than $10,000 in the past two months and city employees are spending approximately 25 percent of their time addressing vandalism and breaches at the mall.

Council members Juan Figueroa, Theodore Sanchez, Fred Shorett, Sandra Ibarra, Kimberly Calvin and Damon Alexander approved the city issuing RFQ/RFP to solicit interest from qualified firms to handle demolition.

Councilmember Ben Reynoso voted against.

The Council also approved entering into a month-to-month professional services agreement with Redwood Private Security for 24/7 onsite patrol of the property until demolition can be complete.

The City hopes to award a contract in October.
