School Board to fill vacancy with temporary appointment

On Tuesday the Board of Education for the San Bernardino City Unified School District voted to fill the vacant position created by the passing of Dr. Margaret Hill with a provisional appointment.  This will  allow the existing Board of Education members to accept applications for and appoint a new board member to serve in the vacant position until the next general election, on November 8, 2022 when voters will determine who will fill the remainder of the vacant term.

The Deadline to apply is February 2. Interested parties can view the application on the District’s website.

The appointed trustee will serve from February 15, 2022, through mid December 2022. Candidates interested in being elected to serve the remainder of the term, which ends December 2024, would need to run for the permanent seat through the formal elections process and be elected by voters.

In order to be eligible for appointment, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Citizen of the state of California
  • Reside within the boundaries of the San Bernardino City Unified School District
  • Be a registered voter
  • Not disqualified by the constitution of the state from holding civil office (such as having been convicted of a crime)
  • Not be an employee of the San Bernardino City Unified School District when appointed.

Regular Board meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
